AMA Announces Ban on Drumming and Noise-Making Ahead of Nmaa Dumɔ

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced a temporary ban on drumming and noise-making across the capital, as part of preparations towards the annual Nmaa Dumɔ observance. The directive, issued in a press release dated Thursday, 30 April 2026, will take effect from Monday, 4 May to Thursday, 4 June 2026.

According to the Assembly, the ban is intended to promote peace, harmony and national security during the period. Churches have been instructed to confine their activities within their premises and refrain from the use of musical instruments. Additionally, the use of loudspeakers outside churches, mosques and pubs has been prohibited, while roadside evangelism is to be suspended for the duration of the ban.

The AMA further emphasised the need for mutual respect among religious groups and traditional authorities, urging all parties to avoid derogatory or inflammatory remarks about each other’s beliefs and practices. In line with directives from the Ga Traditional Council, funeral rites and related activities have also been banned within the period.

Enforcement of the directive will be carried out by a designated task force comprising AMA personnel, the Ghana Police Service, and representatives of the traditional councils. The Assembly cautioned that no unauthorised individuals or groups should attempt to enforce the ban. Residents of Accra have been urged to comply fully to ensure an incident-free observance.
