GJA Applauds Ghana’s Rise in Global Press Freedom Rankings

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has commended Ghana’s improved performance in the latest World Press Freedom Index, as the country marked World Press Freedom Day 2026 on 3 May. Ghana moved from 52nd to 39th globally and now ranks 4th in Africa, according to Reporters Without Borders.

In a statement issued in Accra, the Association praised journalists, media institutions and stakeholders for their role in advancing press freedom, noting that the progress reflects sustained advocacy and collaboration. It also acknowledged the support of government and partners in fostering a more enabling media environment.

The GJA, however, cautioned that challenges remain, particularly regarding journalist safety, media sustainability and legal reforms. It called on authorities, including the Ghana Police Service, to investigate attacks on journalists and end impunity, while urging a review of laws that may be used to intimidate the press.

The Association reaffirmed its commitment to defending media freedom and announced plans to hold a national event later this month to mark the occasion. Meanwhile, its President, Albert Dwumfour, is leading a delegation to Paris for the centenary congress of the International Federation of Journalists.
