Ghana’s Vice-President pledges revival of Kumasi market projects
Ghana’s Vice-President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has pledged her government’s commitment to completing abandoned market projects across the country.
She made the remarks during a visit to Kumasi, where she toured the Mamponteng Market site in the Kwabre East Municipality. The market, which has served the community for nearly 300 years, began undergoing an enhancement project in 2012 but has since been left unfinished.
Prof Opoku-Agyemang, who was in the Ashanti Region on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, was accompanied by senior government officials including Alex Segbefia and Ofosu Ampofo. They were joined by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, and the NDC Regional Chairman, Nana Kwasi.
She told a durbar of chiefs and residents that the government is determined to complete the long-abandoned project, describing markets as “the heartbeat of our communities.”
“Politics must always centre on development,” she said. “Markets are more than trading spaces; they are places where our mothers and sisters work in dignity and safety.”
The Vice-President highlighted the role of the District Assembly Common Fund in financing such projects, noting that a quarter of the fund has been allocated to a Market Enhancement Project aimed at upgrading trading centres nationwide.
