Accra — Bilateral trade between Ghana and the Russian Federation has expanded significantly, reaching approximately US$800 million, as Moscow seeks to strengthen its economic engagement with Ghana and the wider African continent.
The development reflects growing commercial relations between the two countries, with trade volumes increasing markedly over the past two years. Russian officials say the expansion presents fresh opportunities for cooperation in agriculture, energy, mining, education and industrial development, while also creating new avenues for private sector investment.
Speaking on the future of Ghana–Russia relations, Russian representatives emphasised that economic cooperation remains a priority, expressing Moscow’s commitment to broadening trade and encouraging greater business-to-business engagement between enterprises in both countries. They noted that Ghana continues to be regarded as an important partner in West Africa, with considerable potential for deeper commercial collaboration.
Trade between the two countries has grown from about US$247 million in 2022 to more than US$800 million, underscoring the rapid expansion of economic exchanges despite a challenging global trading environment.
Russian officials also indicated their readiness to explore partnerships in sectors that support industrialisation, food security and technology transfer, while encouraging Ghanaian businesses to take advantage of opportunities within the Russian market.
The renewed push for closer economic relations comes as Russia continues to deepen its commercial footprint across Africa through increased trade, investment and diplomatic engagement. Ghana, whose economy has shown renewed momentum in recent months, is viewed as a strategic partner capable of serving as a gateway for broader regional cooperation.
Economic analysts note that stronger bilateral trade could diversify Ghana’s international commercial partnerships, provided future cooperation is accompanied by increased investment, technology exchange and value-added production that benefits businesses in both countries.
