Tragedy strikes as desperate throng breaches security at El Wak Stadium
A most dreadful stampede at the El Wak Stadium on Wednesday morning, during which the Ghana Armed Forces was conducting recruitment proceedings for soldiers, has resulted in the deaths of six persons, with numerous others wounded, the GAF has announced.
The wounded are presently under treatment at the 37 Military Hospital. Several remain in rather critical condition, I'm afraid.
In a statement acknowledging the ghastly incident, the Ghana Armed Forces conveyed profound regret regarding the stampede, which occurred prior to the actual commencement of the 2025/2026 recruitment exercise this morning.

The exercise is being conducted simultaneously at various centres throughout the nation.
According to the GAF, at the El Wak Stadium in Accra, preliminary investigations suggest that the stampede was precipitated by an altogether unexpected surge of applicants who broke through security protocols and rushed towards the gates at 06:20 hours — well ahead of the scheduled screening time.
The appalling incident led to the deaths of six prospective recruits, whilst many others sustained injuries, the GAF confirmed.
Those wounded are currently receiving medical attention at the 37 Military Hospital.
Further details to follow as the situation develops.
